Not bad but not 10/105
Just recieved these headphones today and i’m pretty pleased with them so far.
They feel very comfortable i have to admit, not to loose and not to tight and my head is slightly bigger than the average person, lol and the sound quality is pretty awesome even with the bluetooth on. Also there very light weight and fold nicely together which make them VERY portable, they even come with a fancy carrying case .Overall, not a bad set of bluetooth headphones for the new lower price. I would recommend them to anyone as you don’t have to use the bluetooth feature and could use them as regular headphones as there worth it for the quality You can download an app from the app store named “BT HELPER” its a special bluetooth app which connects through these headphones and you can now skip tracks (skip forward and backwards). I downloaded it today and it works great! Specially if you can enable the app to work in the background you don’t have to use it directly through the app, but you have to have a “Special” Iphone to enable the apps to work in the background if you catch my drift ;-)

Excellent choice for SLR gear and laptop5
I settled on the Kata R-103 after looking at the Lowepro Computrekker and Tamrac Cyber 6 and also considering Crumpler “Whickey & Cox” and the Tenba PB-15C. Having a backpack with room for both laptop and camera gear is great for taking a business trip with a rolling suitcase without also dragging a third piece of luggage for the camera, a load that puts you at risk for having to check your luggage

I have a DSLR, 3 lenses, flash, tripod and the usual assortment of cables, plus a Dell D-600 laptop, charger and cords. The Dell is 15″ wide (long?). That assortment would fit any of the five backpacks noted above. If you have more gear than that, you need a bigger backpack, and all of the above makers have bigger models.

The Kata R-103 has several unusual features that give it an edge, but most important, it has a very comfortable harness that can be adjusted to fit both short and tall people. Another reviewer said it fits people 170-180cm tall (5’7″ – 5’11″). I’m 167 cm tall (5’6′) and it fits very well indeed – a lot better than the Tumi laptop “business” backpack I use when I’m not taking camera gear around.

Kata Features: (1) The zippers for the main (camera) compartment go around the outside edge and down under the bag, allowing it to open compeletely for easy access. (2) There’s a smaller zippered flap on the main compartment that gives you easy access to just the camera and lens without the risk that any other gear will fall out. That flap is also zippered all the way down both sides to the bottom. (3) The laptop is accessible from the side, which seems better than access from the top if you want to get at it on a plane (although the zipper could be an inch or two longer). (4) It fits a full-sized 15″ laptop. (But get Kata’s next size – Model HB-207 — if you have a 17″ laptop!) (5) It has a sternum strap, which makes the bag more comfortable to carry and secures it so you can bend or lean over without the load shifting. (6) It comes with a unique set of straps that replace your regular camera strap so you can carry the camera around your neck, as usual, or hang it from the straps of the backpack. That reduces strain on your neck. It makes you look irremediably geeky, but hey, if you travel with a pile of lenses and a laptop, you are a geek, so why not look like one? (7) It comes with a clip-on waist strap and a strap-on tripod carrier that’s much easier to use and less ungainly than the one on the Lowepro Comptrekker. (8) There’s a fairly large pair of zippered pockets hidden under the main flap – ideal for cables and small items. (9) And finally, it’s not as deep from back to front as the Lowepro Computrekker or the Tamrac Cyber 6, which makes it better balanced everywhere you go and easier to maneuver in tight spots like airplanes and subways.

When new, the zippers feel stiff and so does the harness, but once the zippers have been used a few times and you’ve walked a couple of miles, the bag loosens up just enough — kind of like breaking in a good pair of hiking boots. The materials and construction appear to be first rate — tougher fabric and beefier zippers than the Lowepro bags of the same class. And before buying, I asked Kata a question via their web site and got an immediate and comprehensive response, which is a good sign.

I have it since October 2005. I’ve travelled through south india for 11 days – in ‘sleeper class’ train compartments, crowded streets, trekked through the jungle surrounding the periyar lake with the following stuff in this bag -
Canon EOS 350D, a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, a Canon 75-300mm telephoto lens, a Tamron 18-200mm lens, Canon Speedlite 580EX flash, 4 rechargable 2500 milli-amp-hour NiMH AA cells, Nokia cell phone charger, NiMH battery charger, an IBM T42p Thinkpad laptop, laptop charger, my ebook and music library on a spool of 10 DVDs, a charger for the Canon camera NB2LH battery, a Sony portable Discman, an Apple iPod nano 4G (there were 9 more people in our gang, so we needed multiple music playing devices), a portable travelpod for the smaller Kodak DX6490, a larger Hansa tripod for the 350D, Apple earbuds, Shure e3c canalphones, Shure e2c canalphones, a full set of sleeves for the e2c and the e3c, cables for hooking the ipod to the laptop, a 25-in-1 memory card reader, a Nokia 6600 cellphone for continuous bluetooth->GPRS connectivity on my laptop, a kensington laptop cable lock, ethernet cables, a couple of paperbacks and a bunch of other small knickknacks like chewing gum and mints ….. so, the bag although devoid of all the equipment in this snapshot, has much more room than you can see!

The bag is made from military standard nylon that is ACTUALLY dust resistant! I’ve lugged it through a jungle – and not a speck of dust on it yet. It seems to be very shock resistant – Kata should know this kinda stuff well – they make bulletproof vests and other such equipment for the Israeli army!!!

The ergonomics is superb for a person who is 170-180 cms in height. It has full 5 point adjustment, external straps for lashing up tripods to the backpack shell, a really comfortable shoulder ‘wrap’ underneath the shoulder straps.

The bag is the most ruggedly built bag I have ever seen – perhaps with the exception of the Lowepro Dryzone (but who needs something that -heavy- unless one is going kayaking with camera equipment and there is a danger of submersion.) The Kata R-103 comes with a all weather raincoat that is reflective on one side for sun protection and is black on the other for the rains.

I managed to lose one half of the waist strap as it came off the sliplock when I took it off – so I wrote them asking about what I should do next. I expected a mail giving the part number and a URL where I could order it online. But guess what – I received an email from them within half an hour asking me for my shipping address and phone number – saying that a replacement waist strap would be on the way immediately the next day. Thank you Bellina Israel – Kata should be proud of people like you!

This is some of the best customer service I have seen yet.

I haven’t been paid by anyone to write this. This backpack is just a showcase of very good design and engineering. And if Kata is listed on your local stock exchange – you should go and buy some stock. I would.

Fantastic bag!5
I wanted a backpack with excellent protection, good size and flexibility and one that hopefully didn’t scream “Steal me, I have camera equipment”! The Kata R-103 fills those needs perfectly.
1) The protection is unparalleled. Being made by a company dedicated to body armor, this isn’t that surprising. Your camera would have to be solidly hit by an almost deliberate hit to do any damage.
2) I fit my XT, four lenses, a flash, my Jobo Giga2 20gb portable HD plus tons of little stuff in this thing. I still have room for a laptop!
3) Nothing on it, unless I have my tripod in the included holder, says camera. It’s almost incognito.
I’ve had Tamrac and Lowepro – simply no comparison.

Do It Yourself Mounting Review4
I got this type wall mount for the swivel side to side and tilt up / down adjustment to view. It has GREAT left / right ( side to side ) movement with OK Tilt adjustment. I have a 50″ Pioneer Elite 1140 Plasma ( 80lbs )

The overall wall mount design is OK, they might have made it a bit easier to get to the connections after the mounting hardware is installed ( that cost them a star ) It appears to be sturdy and robust enough to handle the 50″ plasma.

The manufatcturer does NOT reccomend this unit for brick or mason. ONLY approved for drywall with wood studs installlation

If you are going to DIY : YOU MUST HAVE 2 PEOPLE…you need extra hands to move the TV and mount it. Don’t try it yourself.

Attaching the frame base to the wall: If you are NOT handy with tools and measurements, able to use drills, levels and a stud finder….PAY for installation…this is not time to experiment, a failure will be very expensive.

The wall layout and position of the TV on the wall:

My wall is a drywall and studs 8 feet high, and 8 feet wide to mount against. My TV is 28″ high, 48″ wide ( without the side speakers attached, 52″ attached ) I decided for viewing, the top of the TV was 20″ from the ceiling and the bottom of the TV was 48″ up from the floor. I left 24″ on each side from the TV edge to the side wall. You decide what position will work best for you and locate accordingly. Take good measurements and double check the math.

You MUST BE handy with hand tools and know how to find the studs in drywall. Use a level to be certain, the wall is NOT going to be level / square. Level to the wall frame base, not the wall. The wall frame ( base ) attaches with (4) 3/8″ x 2 1/2″ lag screws. 1 in each corner of the frame and MUST drill into the center of the studs. Use a good quality stud finder and mark you spots to drill. I used a 1/8″ drill bit for a pilot hole to be sure I was hitting wood. I used a 18V drill with a 7/16 socket to drive the 4 lag screws into the 4 pilot holes and left the screw out a few turns. I finished tightening them down by hand with a socket wrench, to make sure it was tight fit, but not overtighten and bust the screw out of the wood as the drill might do. ( Hint put a bit of turtle wax or liquid dish soap on the lag screw threads to make them go in a bit easier )

I was a bit luck here, there was a cross piece of wood between the studs right where I wanted to mount, so I put in an extra lag screw in the frame center from my own screw supply for just in case.

Attaching the mount to the TV: YOU MUST protect the TV face / screen

You have to lay the TV on it’s face to attach the hardware on the back. Lay down a nice soft blanket, nothing rough to protect the surface and screen. I used the dining room table with a soft quilt. The included instructions were OK, not great for attaching the mounting hardware. BEWARE there is a chance of PINCH POINTS as the mounting hardware can swivel.

After the mounting hardware is attached, and the base frame is secure to the wall, now is the time. 2 people to attach the TV to the frame base. It attaches easy, but the bottom screws to tighten were hard to turn. Be prepared to catch the TV after first installing to the wall incase of any screw failure or hardware issues.

Important note: Flush against the wall the TV may be level and when fully extended it may be off just a bit. As the TV get further away from the wall, the arm mount acts more like a lever than a mount and applies force to the base bracket differently than when it is a flush fit.

There are mounting adjustments to level the TV after wall installation.

All in all…it wasn’t too bad a project. About 2 hours from beginning to end and watching the TV.

Good Product5
This mount seems to be very sturdy. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Very easy to install, probably took less than 30 minutes. Used to mount my Samsung LSN4051D. Mount fits the LCD perfectly without restricting any of the cables. Mounted on a 40″ diagonal wall in family room. Articulating arm makes it nice to rotate for best viewing anywhere in the room. The bolts used to mount the LCD to the Monitor Bracket were too short for the 4051D. It requires a metric bolt. An M6x12 is provided but barely makes contact, if at all, with the threaded holes on the LCD. An M6x18 would be better and a M6x16 may work. I could not find an M6x18 so I used an M6x20 and an extra washer so the bolt would not bottom out on the LCD but would secure it’s self using all the threads on the LCD. The Wire tie clips, Wire ties Safety bolts and Preventor bolts were missing. Used what I had for now. Called Sanus and they are suppose to be sending replacements. Ordered through Amazon.com. Cost was about 1/2 of what BB wanted. Shipping was excellent. They shipped (plus free shipping)the day I ordered and I received the mount 4 days later. Have always had good experience with Amazon.com.

Great product but some parts missing4
The good: great product, well designed and built, easy to read instructions, relatively straightforward and simple mounting, great price through Amazon (saved about $160 compared to Best Buy), free shipping – and item arrived several days ahead of earliest advertised delivery date.
The bad: some screws and cable ties were missing (I checked under my coffee table three times). I had enough of the right size and length screws to perfectly mount my 50″ Panasonic, but I was given only one of two “safety” screws, and I didn’t receive the “preventor” bolts or “wire clips”. I have yet to call Sanus to see if they will send replacement parts (otherwise I will need to buy some screws at the hardware store, a task made a bit more difficult since the instructions don’t specifiy the size or thread gage of the missing screws).

A Very Good Camera5
I’ve purchased my Panasonic DMC-ZR1 still camera via Amazon just a few days ago because I needed an ultra-compact backup for may Nikon D90. When you travel there might be some situations when you are not in the mood or just can not use your DSLR. So I was looking for a small camera, which could produce high quality outdoor pictures and HD video.

I’m an advanced amateur photographer. I take pictures mostly on weekends and vacations when I prefer to have in my pocket a small but sophisticated camera which I can forget about during the day but which can take great shots when it is needed. That is why my best cameras were Sony DSC-T1, T30, and recently – T100. The latter one was nominated as the best ultra-compact in 2007, and it indeed was. But time flies and a new 16:9 wide format came to still cameras and video, which T100 did not support. So about a year ago I purchased Panasonic DMC-TZ5 and a little bit later – FZ18. I bought FZ18 because of its incredibly bright 18x super zoom lens. I believe that each of above mentioned cameras was an absolute champion in their class at that time, but now I wanted something almost as good as that but in a small package.

After doing a lot of research on Amazon.com and dpreview I’ve chosen ZR1. My first impression – it’s a very good camera. I like a solid build quality of its metall body. There are no flimsy elements or grinding sounds while zooming or focussing. Zoom itself is very smooth both optically and mechanically. While taking stills it is very fast, however it has some inertia. While shooting video it’s relatively slow, which allowes autofocus to do its job well.

What I like very much about my Sony T100 – when shooting video of a moving subject the autofocus keeps it in focus all the time by doing a very small adjustments which you can hardly admit. Many other P&S cameras either do not allow zooming on video or hunting focus most of the time. That was the issue with the original TZ5, which was significantly improved in software update ver. 1.2. From my prospective the new ZR1 has as the same great autofocus mechanism as my T100 – when you follow a moving subject or apply zoom ZR1 keeps it in focus nicely (and without producing any noticeable sound). But when you do a panorama without a central moving object – do it slowly to allow the camera to decide, which next part of your picture should be in focus. On still pictures the autofocus is very quick and precise.

The 8x zoom Leica lens is just great: very good colors fidelity, contrast, and color saturation in the entire zoom range from wide to tele. The wide 25mm (equivalent) is great, but it comes at some cost: for the distant subjects the barrel distortions and the decrease of sharpness of the peripheral areas are pretty visible, however when you shoot from a relatively close distance around 1.5-3 m it seems some special processing is involved because there is almost no any visible barrel distortions or loss of sharpness. I have to admit all three my Panasonic cameras behave the same way but for ZR1 it’s more noticable because of its incredibly wide 25mm lens. If you apply a little bit zoom the resolution becomes pretty even accross the picture and with no barrel distortions. I did not perform any special stress testing but on all the pictures I’ve got I did not see any chromatic aberrations or vignetting in the entire zoom range. Physically you can zoom in the only 8x range but it is possible to increase it up to 15.6x for the lower 3MP picture resolution. Normally you might want that if you’re taking pictures of some specific subjects like kids, birds, or animals. Just imagine – having 400mm equivalent telephoto lens in your pocket – it’s just amazing, and IMHO those 3MP shots look pretty good on my 24″ monitor (if you do not crop them more).

A new ZR1 has the impressive 12MP comparing to 9MP of TZ5 but on the same sensor size, and as a result – more noise. On the [...]site you could read that Panasonic did a great job by separating the entire noise into its low-frequency and high-frequency wavebands and also splitting the color and luminance noise and handling them separately. My comparative edge-to-edge testing of both ZR1 and TZ5 shots showed that ZR1 does exactly what was stated and does it pretty good. On the ZR1 picturese taken at dim light conditions the noise was remarkable less than on the TZ5′s ones! However at a very-very dark conditions when the pictures become very grainy you can see that the level of noise from ZR1 is somewhat bigger, than from TZ5. Another good news is that the white balance in ZR1 is almost perfect: the night pictures taken by TZ5 and FZ18 were either colored red or had some other weird colors while ZR1 in alomst dark situations showed as the same correct white balance as if the pictures were taken at a day-light time.

If you’re shooting on a bright sunny day your pictures might be too much contrasty and either shadow parts like trees can be darken to black or the blue sky or some other light areas might be completely washed out. The camera menu does not allow you to adjust the contrast directly but you can set an Intelligent Exposure mode instead. Then it constantly analyzes the scene and if it has too much contrast the camera automatically applys either slower shutter speed or higher ISO and reduces the overal contrast. I found that on ZR1 that feature is not that good as on TZ5. Another way is to switch the mode dial to “MS” or “SCN” mode and select “High Dynamic” scene. In that case camera unconditionally and remarkably decreases the overall contrast (more than in Intelligent mode) and adjusts the shutter speed or/and ISO the way that even dark areas are well exposed, and that really works well.

There are the two things which are still better on my T100 than on ZR1 or TZ5: the quality of the VGA video and the clarity of sound. However having the HD video mode you might not need VGA at all. The quality of HD video on ZR1 is as the same great as on TZ5 and the image stabilization is even slightly better. But for stills the image stabilization was much more improved, I guess more than the 2 times as they stated. On the maximum zoom in low light many of my TZ5 pictures were slightly smeared, while the ones taken by ZR1 at the same time were perfect.

I like the ZR1′s menu and controls – they’re similar to TZ5′ and are very clear and intuitive. Plus there are some additional functions. It allows you to set some parameters manually, but do it only if you’re very clear about what you’re doing, otherwise let that sophisticated camera do it for you. For example: you might be taking a picture of a tree and the system sets the ISO=100 and shutter speed 1/20. But then you see a small squirell and apply the 15.6x zoom to have it big enough on your screen. As a result system might change ISO to 500 and shutter to 1/100. You might be thinking that the camera got crazy, but actually it detected that your hands are shaking too much for the big focal length you set and so the shutter speed needs to be much faster to prevent the shot to be blurred. It’s intelligent mode is pretty good.

UPDATE: This ZR1 camera has an incredible display: it shows pictures at any angle and even in the direct sunlight. A while ago I was going on vacation to Cancun and I purchased a Kodak V1273 ultracompact camera because of its wide-screen stills and HD video. But when I tried to use it on the beach I was totally confused – nothing, absolutely nothing was visible on display on a sunny day! If I did not have my Sony T100 as a backup all my vacation would be completely spoiled. In the direct sunlight the image on the T100′s display looks like a black-and-white reflection, but at least you can point and frame your shots and use the menu. ZR1 does even better – the picture in the direct sunlight has all the colors, just looks darker and not that contrast. On the TZ5′s display if you slightly turn camera around the horizontal axis the brightness and contrast of the image is changing pretty much. On the ZR’s one picture remains the same regardless of from what angle you are looking at it. It means you’re not going to regret the display is not swivable as well as you will not miss the optical viewfinder because you can see the pictures even in the direct sunlight. Only one thing: it seems the palette of that display is a kind of limited and it might not show some subtle tints of colors, so don’t judge colors until you see it on a good monitor.

UPDATE2: Recently I did some comparative testing of the picture quality of my ZR1 and TZ5. A side-by-side comparison has shown that the general resolution and sharpnes of the ZR1′s pictures is remarkably higher than of TZ5′s ones. From the detailed analysis I got an impression that around 20% of that improvement comes from higher sensor resolution (12MP verse 9MP), 30-40% because of the better noise reduction, and about 40-50% because of the stronger internal sharpening in ZR1 than that in TZ5. When I did some sharpening to my TZ5′s photos using the Nero Photoshop the difference became less visible. For better understanding why the more sophisticated noise reduction might help pictures to look sharper you can think about it this way: as the same as contrast is a difference between light and dark areas, sharpness is a difference between plain areas and edges. The less a certain area has noise, the more it looks “plain”, and so it more differentiates from edges making a sharper impression. Also because the original purpose of this purchase was to have a backup for my Nikon D90 I did some comparison of their HD video capabilities. Would you believe or not – ZR1 provided much better moving picture resolution than D90. Of course the ZR1′s movies show some noise (as the same as any other compact P&S camera) while D90′s ones don’t. That noise is not much noticable because it looks like the one on the film cameras and I could not admit any visible artefacts, so the general impression is much better, and when I have a choice between D90 and ZR1 I will definitely shoot HD movies with my ZR1 camera.

So I think this is a very good camera and the best in its class for now.

A nice step up for a value minded consumer5
I purchased the ZR1 after scouring reviews across the web for a good balance of value and quality. So far, so good!

Pros:
-Great blend of features and ease of use.
-Picture quality is very good.
-Optical Zoom is quiet and smooth
-Scene modes are actually very helpful and produce excellent results by utilizing the best of this cameras features when the situation demands it(albeit pic size is reduced to 3 Megapixels often to accomplish). I used to think of these as settings for dummies, but they often produce a far superior result in difficult lighting situations etc.
-Camera is solidly built and takes consecutive shots with little down time.(I’m used to waiting 3-5 seconds for the flash to store juice…Those days are gone!!)
-Bundled software that searches pics using facial recognition is kind of neat
-HD Video quality good enough to forgo my flip camera for video uploads etc(image stability feature helps quite a bit here)
-*My Favorite…Worth the price I paid.

-Teenage step-daughter can’t get enough pics of herself for networking sites.(says she likes this camera & says it makes her “look skinny”…so much for the hand-me-down Sony Cybershot DSC-P72.

I purchased this camera to use as a backup to my Nikon Digital SLR, and to use when a compact camera is more appropriate or easier to carry that an SLR. Great quality product & shipping that I highly recommend. The tweeters have the option of either angled or surface mount. The blue led logo is a great idea, although I didn’t like the idea of them being on all the time but that was easily adapted with an inline switch. This is a very high end product with a low end price.

Nice Highs4
These speakers were easy to install. All the hardware you’d need comes with it, but you’ll need tools. After installation and a little head unit tweaking, I noticed a HUGE difference from the stock speakers. Almost like I had them attached to an amp, but only I didn’t. Highs were crisp, but mids could be better. At the price I paid, I am satisfied with these speakers!

Excellent sound for great price5
I purchased a pair of these component speakers back in April and installed them to replace the front pair of component speakers that I had and these sound alot better. Simple security with room for expansion4
The Lorex LW2201 Weatherproof Ultra Wireless Surveillance System works as well as advertised. I only have a few minor gripes about the system.

The set-up is incredibly simple. Just plug the power supplies into the camera and into the receiver, screw on the antennas, and plug the A/V cables into some kind of monitor/TV. My camera was already paired with the unit, so I didn’t have to do anything else. Pairing the wireless unit with the camera, or another camera is simple, just push 1 button on the receiver and a big yellow button on the camera and it’s good to go. They claim the pairing function securely connects your camera to your receiver so that no one else can grab hold of your camera’s frequency, but I have no way to test that. I’ll just take their word for it. The unit comes with a small arm stand for the camera, and a couple screws to mount it. You might need extra screw mounting pieces if you want to mount it into something like brick, though. Regardless, set-up and installation is a snap.

The image is very good in daylight. However, the night vision is only “acceptable” quality. The far-red LED lights create a bit of a halo effect around the center of the camera’s lens. So everything in the center of the image looks clear at 20-25ft or less, but the stuff on the periphery of the center of the image is a little darker and fuzzier. Still, you can see what’s going on. Also, be sure to note that you can see the red LED lights of the camera. This is good if you want everyoen to know that you have a camera, but if you want a more stealthy hidign spot for your camera, it’s definitely going to give it away. The mic works well at about 25 ft or less, but after that it definitely tails off.

So to sum up the problems: I think the night vision image is a little bad at the edges of the image, the mic isn’t all that great at longer distances, my unit had one dead LED bulb on it (I don’t think it really affected the image quality by itself), and the far-red LEDs are not truly infrared so you can see them with the naked eye.

The problems I stated are pretty minor in nature, though. The Lorex system is solid and you can expand it to include 4 total cameras, and even view them simultaneously split-screen in your monitor. Overall, I recommend this unit for a simple security solution.

So far so good, but….3
I already owned another Lorex package product which included 4 of these wireless cameras and a small 7″ lcd display with wireless receiver. After about 3 months of use, the display failed completely, while the cameras continued to work. Lorex support was less than outstanding on dealing with the display issue and I have read other reports about reliability concerns. So, in an attempt to remedy my problem, I bought this setup which gave me an extra camera and the small wireless receiver. The receiver will connect to most modern displays via the included connector cables and thus provide the same 4 panel view that the Lorex wireless display had. In this way, I now have a reliable display that is larger, brighter and easier to use than the Lorex version. The receiver allows for single channel (full screen) display or a quad view of all four cameras at once. It also allows for easy pairing and has a selectable view mode of lower quality for simple viewing at higher fps, vs. a higher VGA quality with lower fps. I find the higher quality more useful and the lower fps is not troublesome for my purposes. It would be simple to run this unit to a DVR and record also, though I have yet to do so. As the available light diminishes, the cameras quickly (too quickly in my opinion) go to black and white mode. The night time view distance is obviously much less, but sufficient unless it is complete darkness. I’d say it comes close to achieving its claimed 40′ distance at night, but with much less detail. Overall, the units perform as advertised with minor complaints – except reliability. The reason I gave 3 stars is mostly for reliability issues and customer service I’ve experienced with Lorex. In the future I would not buy their units with included LCD’s, but get something like this with a receiver that provides the quad view for my own monitor.

Very decent for its intended purpose.4
I live in apartments with windows facing the parking lot. For some time now, I have thought about hooking up a webcam of some kind and pointing it out the window towards where I parked. The logistics of running a long USB cable from my computer to the appropriate window prevented me from doing it that way. A wireless WiFi webcam might be the perfect solution, but not everyone has a WiFi network (and these cameras can be a bit pricey).

The Lorex LW2201 is an interesting compromise between legacy equipment (old fashioned cameras) and modern wireless technology. The camera itself is designed to be usable outdoors, meaning it is in a rugged metal enclosure complete with an adjustable hood that slides forward to cover and protect the camera lens. It is a color camera, but in low-light conditions, it clicks in to “night vision” mode and the image goes to black and white. A ring of infrared LED lights around the lens light up, allowing you to see an image even in complete darkness. There are no wires — the camera has an antenna that attaches to the back, and a power cable that plugs in to an AC adapter. Bolt the base somewhere, run the power cable, and you are set from that side.

Elsewhere, a tiny receiver — about the size of a deck of playing cards — can be plugged in, and an antenna is attached to allow it to receive video from the camera. Video and audio outputs come out of the receiver (cables are included) and then run to a monitor or TV, or in to a recording device. If you just wanted to keep tabs on your car overnight, you could use a cheap VCR and let it record in 6-8 hour mode.

Overall, setup of one camera to the one receiver is very simple. The receiver can support multiple cameras, and can be set to flip between the cameras (full screen), or split the screen up to display four images at a time. I cannot comment on those features, as I only have the one camera. A button is pressed on the receiver to get it in to a scanning more, then you have to press a button on the camera within 30 seconds to let them sync to each other. It seems easy enough.

The camera does have sound, so if it is mounted outside, you can hear a bit of what is going on, but don’t expect miracles. It’s not quite as sensitive as a home movie camera typically is. So, overall, you have wireless color (in light) or black and white (in darkness) video with sound, transmitted to a receiver within a few hundred feet.

Now, the downsides:

First, range is very limited unless you have an open area with no obstructions. I hooked the received up to a TV in my livingroom, then tried to use the camera in the bedroom connected to the same wall that the TV is against. Even though the range was only about 15 feet between camera and receiver, signal quality was too poor to lock on. This was due to the bedroom having several large metal shelving units which obstruct the signal. If the room was empty, I doubt there would be such problems.

Video quality is also quite poor. The camera sends a digital picture that looks more like a YouTube video than a video camera image. You can toggle between high speed but low resolution (thus, motion is good but image is blocky), or a slower high resolution image. In bright light, the high resolution image looks very good — a bit “digital” but totally watchable. The frame rate slows way down, though, so it comes across looking like a traditional security camera clip you’d see on a TV news program.

Overall, the camera seems well built and designed, but wired cameras I have seen provided a better picture than this wireless system. However, in situations like mine, a wireless solution is a MUCH easier choice. As long as you can tap in to power, you can mount this camera anywhere within range and get a totally usable image without any wiring or network configurations.

For my specific uses, though, I think my next effort will be with a WiFi camera. Since I already have a network which completely covers my home, that may produce better results than this dedicated security system.

Instructions were clear, packaging was nice, and setup was simple. It does what it does, and the wireless “plug and go” is very neat. Just keep in mind the designed use — picture quality may be worse than you expect, and range may be more limited than you expect.

Overall, a very good product for it’s intended audience.

Poor Customer Service1
My telescope arrived damaged. Not shipping damaged, but defective.

I contacted Celestron and they instructed me to take the telescope apart, remove a part, and reassemble it for shipping. I had to repackage it and send it to their repair department.

Their department received it on the 23rd of January and they STILL have it. It’s now Feb 25th.

I bought a BRAND NEW telescope and I have yet to use it. They told me that their repair department has up to 30 days to process a repair. Or what? Nothing. I call and they simply tell me that I have to keep waiting. There is a line. Wait for an email with your shipping information. No consolation prize, no rush on the repair, NOTHING. Simply, too bad, you have to wait longer.

Not only that, but their customer support line services the entire world. They even tell you that when you call. So the wait time can be extremely long.

If I knew this is the customer service process, I would not have bought this product. The telescope is no doubt a great one. I just wish I could have found out by now. Unacceptable customer service that I have no choice but to accept.

If customer service is anywhere near the top of your list, do not buy from Celestron.

Terrific For Galaxy, Not Stars5
The CPC 925 is very easy-to-use once it is set-up and aligned. I would recommend that any user align the finderscope during the day. The pin on the tripod is harder to hit than one might find necessary, but the set-in screws that hold the telescope to the tripod are very easy.

The optics are quite good on galaxies and nebulae, but I could not get a crisp star image over three days of use. At first, I thought this lack of crispness was due to atmospheric seeing, but seeing was above average on the last night I used the scope. As a result, I looked at the corrector plate, and the coating has a bubble, swirls, and what looks like spider webs. I have decided to return the scope. Amazon.com arranged for UPS return, but I have not heard from UPS (5 business days). I hope this is resolved quickly because I want to order the Celestron CPC 8.

The objects are easy to locate in the supplied Plossl eyepiece with a wide field of view. Still, the objects are always at or near the center of the field of view. I have had some odd slews; I was looking at M81 and entered M82; the objects are very close to one another (in the same eyepiece field of view at 59X), yet the telescope went all the way around to find the object. The views of Saturn are spectacular this year with the Rings nearly edge on. The Rings were quite bright, yet I could see the shadow of the Rings on the globe.

I do not like the mirror flop; the image shifts whenever focus is adjusted. My older Celestron does not do this.

I have been able to see all the galaxies and planetary nebulae that I have tried, and my skies are moderately light-polluted.

I would like to have more lists (not necessarily from Celestron) about recommended objects. I understand the Constellation List is supposed to be quite good at pointing out recommended objects.

Celestron’s 9.25-inch optical system has enjoyed a loyal following since we first introduced it with our Ultima 9.25-inch in 1995. Now the 9.25-inch optical tube is coupled with Celestron’s newest computerized telescope family–the CPC GPS series.

The 9.25-inch was already a favorite among astrophotographers and discerning visual observers and it offers 33% more light gathering than our 8-inch model. The CPC 925 GPS was specifically designed for visual infinity focus when using 2-inch eyepieces and has an optimized baffle system to benefit astrophotography by minimizing vignetting at the edge of the field of view. Its longer primary focal length and lower magnification secondary mirror contribute to a flatter field of view at the focal plane and helps to further reduce optical aberrations.

This feature packed model comes standard with Celestron’s renowned StarBright multi-coatings. The CPC 925 GPS is compatible with the complete line of Celestron photographic and visual accessories.

What makes the CPC 925 GPS great for astrophotography?

  • Longer focal length primary and lower magnification secondary–Contributes to a flatter focal plane with less coma and off-axis astigmatism.
  • Baffle design–Optimized for astrophotography. Minimizes vignetting at the edge of the field of view. This reduces light drop off at the corners of your film plane.
  • Hand Figured Optics–Just like all other Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, the CPC 925 GPS optics are individually matched and hand figured to ensure the highest optical quality in every telescope.
  • Focus mechanism–At the heart of Celestron’s Schmidt-Cassegrain focus mechanism are pre-loaded ball bearings, not bushings, minimizing focus shift.

Internal GPS
The CPC Series’ internal GPS receiver automatically downloads the date and time from orbiting satellites and pinpoints its exact location on Earth. This eliminates the need for you to manually enter the date, time, longitude and latitude.

Celestron’s Revolutionary SkyAlign
Once the CPC’s internal GPS has established the telescope’s position, aligning the telescope is as easy as 1-2-3! Simply locate and use hand control to manually point (slew) the telescope to three bright celestial objects. You do not need to know the names of the stars–you may even pick the moon or bright planets! Celestron’s NexStar software technology will model the night sky to determine the position of every star, planet and celestial object above the horizon. Once aligned, the remote hand control allows direct access to each of the celestial catalogs in its user-friendly database.

Celestial Object Database
The CPC database contains over 40,000 celestial objects including Messier objects, the Caldwell Catalog, as well as NGC Galaxies, nebulae and planets. User-definable filter limits make navigating through this expansive database quicker and easier. Filter Limits let you filter out objects that are outside of your local horizon (ie, if trees or mountains were in the way).

Identify feature tells you what you’re looking at, but it can also be a very fun way to tour around the sky. Just point the telescope up somewhere and ask it to identify Messier objects (for instance) and it will show you the 5 nearest Messier objects to your position and let you go to them. You can keep doing this for different parts of the sky or for different object types–it is a lot of fun.

There’s also “Solar Sys Align” that lets you align on the sun or moon for daytime observing–it is easy to use this to see planets or bright stars in the day.
